Reps make case for state police in 36 states

Nigerian House of Representatives on Tuesday accepted that state police should be established in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.

This was contained in a bill seeking to alter Section 214 of the constitution in order to make room for the establishment of state and community police in the country. The bill passed second reading in the House.
The bill, sponsor by Dada Awoyele, also seeks to substitute the word “force” with “service” in its nomenclature.

According to Awoyele, there was exigent need for an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to allow the government establishment of a State Police in every state of the nation, arguing that the present structure of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was highly centralised and far removed from the people.
He added that the modification had become indispensable given the rising insecurity in the country.
